Caring for elderly parents from abroad: a practical guide for NRIs
Living abroad while your parents grow older in India carries a particular kind of weight. You want them to have their independence and their home โ but every unanswered call sets off a quiet worry. You can't be there every day. You can, however, build a system that keeps them safe and keeps you close.
1. Put one person on the ground โ and support them
Day-to-day care needs someone local: a sibling, a trusted relative, or a hired attendant. Your job from abroad isn't to replace them โ it's to coordinate and support them. Agree clearly on who does what, and give that person tools that make their job easier, not a stream of anxious messages.
2. Turn "how are they?" into something you can actually see
The hardest part of distance is the not-knowing. Replace vague reassurance with a simple daily signal: did today's routine happen? When you can see that this morning's medicine was taken and lunch was eaten, the worry has somewhere to rest.
- Write down the daily routine โ medicines, meals, a walk, vitals
- Decide how each task gets confirmed (a tick, a photo, a note)
- Agree what counts as "call me now" โ a missed heart medicine, a fall, a skipped meal two days running
3. Get alerts, not just updates
You shouldn't have to remember to check. The system should tell you when something needs attention. A missed-dose alert on your phone at 9pm your time โ while it's morning in India โ is worth more than a dozen "all fine" messages.
4. Handle money and consent up front
Sort out who pays for what, and make sure whoever manages your parent's health information is authorised to do so. Keep a shared, private record โ not scattered across five people's chat histories.
5. Don't let logistics crowd out closeness
It's easy for every call home to become a status meeting about tablets and appointments. Protect a little space for the other thing โ a photo of your mother's garden, a note about how your father slept, a small daily moment. Feeling like a family matters as much as the checklist.
How HealthTracker helps
HealthTracker was built for exactly this. Your family sets your parent's daily routine once; the local carer ticks things off; you get WhatsApp/SMS/email reminders and missed-dose alerts wherever you are; and a shared family journal keeps the human side โ moods, photos, small updates โ in one warm place. Everyone sees the same thing, across every time zone.
Be there, even when you can't be there
